Commonwealth Home Support Program

If you’re finding everyday tasks more difficult and think some help could improve your health and wellbeing, the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) may be right for you.

What is the commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)?

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is a government-funded service designed to help older Australians stay independent and comfortable in their own homes. It offers a little extra support when you need it and includes things like help with housework, transport so you can get to the shops or appointments, minor home maintenance and repairs, and nursing care.

Getting started

If you are finding everyday tasks more difficult, and feel you might benefit from some help, the first step is to complete an assessment through My Aged Care. This assessment will confirm your eligibility for assistance, and the types of support you can receive.

What does CHSP cover?

CHSP offers low-level home services, with the types of services you can receive dependent upon the outcome of your assessment. You will need to pay a small contribution towards the cost of your care.

Services may include:

  • Meal preparation
  • Personal care
  • Nursing care
  • Allied health and therapy
  • Home and community general respite
  • Cottage respite
  • Home modifications
  • Home maintenance and repairs
  • Domestic assistance
  • Equipment and products
  • Transport
  • Social support and community engagement
  • Specialised support services
  • Hoarding and squalor assistance

Eligibility

You may eligible for CHSP is you are:

  • 65 years or older (or 50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people)
  • 50 years or older (or 45 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) if you are on a low income and are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

CHSP is suitable for older Australians who are finding everyday tasks more difficult and would benefit from low level support.

To access CHSP services, you will need an assessment through My Aged Care. This assessment will confirm your eligibility and the types of support you can receive.

You are eligible for CHSP if you are:

  • 65 years or older (or 50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people), or
  • 50 years or older (or 45 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) if you are on a low income and are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

The Australian Government helps cover the cost of CHSP services by paying funding directly to your service provider. This funding reduces the amount you need to pay for the services you receive.

Each service provider sets their own prices, and most CHSP services are charged by the hour. There’s no income assessment required, and you only contribute to the cost of the services you receive.

If you can’t afford to contribute to your care, don’t worry – you won’t miss out. Please talk to us so we can discuss your options.

While CHSP provides ongoing, low-level support, it does not increase as your needs change.

If you find you need more help than CHSP can offer, you may need a new assessment for the Support at Home program, which is designed for people who need more ongoing services to live safely at home. To arrange to be reassessed, visit My Aged Care
