Veterans Home Care

If you are a veteran or war widow or widower living at home and you’re finding everyday tasks harder, the Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) program, provided through the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), can help you stay independent and safe in your own home.

What is Veterans Home Care?

Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) is an Australian Government–funded program delivered through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). It provides low‑level, practical support to eligible veterans and their carers to help them continue living independently at home.

VHC is designed for people who need a little help with daily tasks, but do not require high‑level or complex care. If you need higher‑level care is needed, you may be referred to other programs such as DVA’s Community Nursing services.

Getting started

To access VHC services, you need to complete an assessment with a Veterans’ Home Care Assessment Agency. Assessments are usually completed over the phone and help determine your eligibility and what types of support you can receive. You can call the Veterans Home Care assessment agency on 1300 550 450. Once approved, services are arranged through your local VHC service provider.

What does VHC cover?

VHC provides low‑level home support services based on your assessed needs. Services may include:

  • Domestic assistance
  • Personal care
  • Home and garden maintenance
  • Respite care

You will be asked to contribute to the cost of VHC services by paying a small co-payment.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for VHC if you:

  • Hold a Veteran Gold Card, or a Veteran White Card (specific conditions or Non‑Liability Health Care), and
  • Live at home, and
  • Have difficulty performing everyday activities without help.

VHC is for older, eligible veterans and their dependents who are finding everyday tasks more difficult and would benefit from low level support.

To access VHC, you will need an assessment through a Veterans’ Home Care Assessment Agency. This assessment confirms your eligibility and the types of services you can receive. You can call the Veterans Home Care assessment agency on 1300 550 450.

Yes. Veterans Home Care (VHC) services require a small co‑payment, which is capped at a maximum amount depending on the service type. Respite care through VHC does not usually require a co‑payment.

Veterans Home Care (VHC) provides low‑level support which does not increase as your needs change. If you require higher‑level or more complex care, you may be reassessed and referred to other programs such as DVA’s Community Nursing services.
