Understanding Commonwealth Home Support Programme Funding

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is a government-funded service that provides low-level support to help older Australians live independently and safely at home.

Who is CHSP for?
If you’re finding everyday tasks more difficult and think some help could improve your health and wellbeing, CHSP may be right for you.

You may be eligible for CHSP if you are:
65 years or older (or 50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people), or
50 years or older (or 45 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) if you are on a low income and are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

To access CHSP services, you will need an assessment through My Aged Care. This assessment will confirm your eligibility and the types of support you can receive.

Will I have to contribute to the cost of my care?
Yes. You will usually need to pay a small contribution towards the cost of your care.
The Australian Government pays CHSP funding directly to your service provider. Your provider uses this funding to help reduce the cost of the services you receive.

More about CHSP contributions
Each service provider sets their own prices. Most services are charged at an hourly rate, and you only pay for the services on the days you receive them.

A few things to know:
Your service will start after you’ve spoken with your provider about the cost and agreed to the fees. You’ll then make regular payments for as long as you receive services.
– There are no exit fees, and you don’t need an income assessment for CHSP.
– If you can’t afford to contribute to your care, don’t worry: you won’t miss out. Please talk to us so we can discuss your options.

What if my needs increase while I’m receiving CHSP services?
While CHSP provides ongoing support, it does not increase as your needs change.
If you find you need more help than CHSP can offer, you may need a new assessment for the Support at Home program, which is designed for people who need more ongoing services to live safely at home.
