People with autism can experience challenges with various activities of daily living.

Fortunately, a variety of care and support services are available to assist people with autism and their loved ones in addressing these challenges. One of these support services is occupational therapy.

In this guide, we will discuss how people with autism can benefit from Kirinari’s occupational therapy services.

Understanding Autism

Before we dive deeper into our occupational therapy support, it’s important to gain a better understanding of what autism is.

Autism represents a spectrum of unique ways in which individuals perceive, process, and respond to the world. It is characterised by varying sensory processing, communication styles, and deep interests that shape a person’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. At times, due to this differing neurotype, people with autism may need support to navigate environments that don’t align with their needs.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a customer-centred health profession focused on enabling individuals to participate fully in their daily activities and roles. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages who experience physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges, helping them develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for meaningful activities—such as self-care, work, and leisure.

An occupational therapist assists people with autism by helping them navigate sensory, social, and practical challenges in their daily lives. They work on building sensory regulation strategies, supporting social skills, and teaching routines like self-care and time management. Additionally, OTs help with emotional regulation, offering coping techniques for managing stress or sensory overload, which promotes greater independence and comfort.

Paediatric occupational therapy specifically supports children in developing the skills needed to participate in their environments, such as at home, school, and in the community. It focuses on addressing developmental, physical, sensory, and cognitive challenges, helping children engage more fully in daily activities.

Benefits of Our Occupational Therapy Support

In this article, we’ll go through some of the benefits of STA services.

Benefits of STA

A break from daily routines

Through STA, NDIS participants are able to take a break from their daily home routines while still receiving the support they need. With active supports in place, they can explore new experiences and engage in activities they enjoy.

Access to personalised care and support

STA services provide access to professional and skilled Support Workers. Services are personalised, and tailored to individual needs, conditions, preferences, and cultural backgrounds.

Learn new skills

With active supports in place, STA services can help NDIS participants live more independently and learn new skills. These skills can include carrying out daily house chores such as cooking and gardening, or self-care.

Providers respite for carers and families

Since the customer will be receiving support from a Service Provider, their families, loved ones, and personal caregivers are able to take a break from their usual caring responsibilities. This allows them to rest and recharge while their loved ones are cared for in a safe and supportive environment.

How to Find STA Providers

If you are interested in STA support for yourself or your loved one, you can start by searching for STA providers in your area. Visit their websites or social media accounts to view accommodation vacancies and STA homes features.

Look for providers that provide high-quality, professional, and personalised supports.

At Kirinari, we currently provide STA services in NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania. As a Registered NDIS Provider, we follow NDIS Practice Standards to provide quality care and support services that are tailored to the needs, conditions, and goals of our customers.

Key Points:

NDIS transport assistance is available through two main funding sections: Core Supports (for daily activities) and Capacity Building Supports (for building independence and skills).

Core Supports includes three transport categories: Assistance with Daily Life (covering support worker travel), Assistance with Social & Community Participation (funding community engagement activities), and General Transport (covering taxi and rideshare expenses).

Capacity Building Supports covers travel expenses for NDIS providers and therapists across eight categories, including Improved Daily Living, Health & Wellbeing, Learning, Relationships, and Finding & Keeping a Job.

Kirinari offers Community Transport services with various vehicle options, including wheelchair-accessible modified vehicles to help NDIS participants travel with ease and achieve greater independence.

Transport assistance is a type of support to help individuals who are unable to travel on their own or use public transportation due to their disability. Its main goal is to help NDIS participants build a better life by providing them with the necessary support to carry out their daily tasks or improve their community participation.

At Kirinari, we offer community transport assistance for eligible NDIS participants under two main sections: Core Supports and Capacity Building Supports. In this article, we’ll help you understand how the transport service works under these two funding sections.

Core Supports

Core funding can be used on support services aimed at helping NDIS participants perform daily living tasks, accomplish long-term goals, or accommodate disability-related needs. Through this funding setup, transport assistance can be accessed through the following Core Supports categories.

Assistance with Daily Life

Transport assistance under this category provides the necessary funding so your support worker can travel from their office to your home. In addition to the time they spend providing daily living support to you, the travel assistance funding covers your support worker’s travel-related expenses, such as parking fees and fuel costs.

Assistance with Social & Community Participation

The mechanics of the travel assistance funding under the Assistance with Social & Community Participation category are a bit similar to those of the Assistance with Daily Life funding. But, instead of compensating your support workers for helping you carry out everyday household tasks, the travel assistance budget under this category is mainly for services aimed at helping you become a more engaged member of your community.

General Transport

Under the General Transport category, you can use the transport assistance funding in your NDIS plan to cover your expenses when you take taxis or use rideshare services to get to your destination. It’s mainly designed to help you carry out errands around town or visit places such as your doctor’s clinic, the supermarket, or entertainment and leisure venues.

Capacity Building Supports

Unlike Core Supports, which are mainly focused on your daily activities, Capacity Building Supports aim to improve your independence and the skills you need to accomplish your goals.

The categories under this section where transport assistance funding can be used include Improved Daily Living, Improved Health & Wellbeing, Improved Learning, Improved Living Arrangements, Improved Relationships, Increased Social & Community Participation, Finding & Keeping a Job, and Support Coordination.

This funding setup covers the travel-related expenses of NDIS support providers, therapists and/or workers as well as their services that fall within the categories mentioned above.

If you’re an NDIS participant who needs transportation assistance, make sure to get in touch with Kirinari. Our Community Transport service is designed to help you get around with ease and thrive in your community.

We’ll also help you find a ride that’s tailored to your needs and preferences, whether you’re looking for a cosy car or a spacious modified vehicle with wheelchair-access features. Get in touch with us today to learn how you can start living a better and more independent life through our Community Transport service.

Key Points:

SIL providers offer NDIS-funded specialised support services and accommodation to help people with disabilities achieve independent living.

Key factors to consider when selecting an SIL provider include their range of services, ability to provide individualised support, accommodation standards, staff qualifications, and reputation.

Choosing the right SIL provider requires thorough research and direct communication to ensure their services align with your personal goals and NDIS plan requirements.

Summary:

Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers deliver government-funded NDIS accommodation and support services for people with disabilities, helping them achieve independent living. When choosing an SIL provider, NDIS participants should evaluate factors including services offered, individualised support, accommodation standards, staff qualifications, and provider reputation. Asking detailed questions about service types, SIL accommodation options, community participation programs, and costs ensures participants select a provider aligned with their personal needs and NDIS plan goals.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers deliver specialised support services and accommodation for people with disabilities. This type of support is funded by the government through the National Disability Insurance (NDIS) scheme.

It is important for NDIS participants to know how to properly choose a SIL service provider based on your needs – so we’ve included some tips below.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a SIL Provider

When selecting an SIL service provider, there are a few important things you should consider. These factors mainly relate to how SIL providers operate and how you can benefit from their services.

Services Offered

One of the first things you have to consider is the range of services offered by an SIL provider. You need to make sure that they provide services that are aligned with your personal needs and the goals outlined in your NDIS plan.

Individualised Support

Make sure that your preferred SIL provider can tailor their services according to your needs and condition since a personalised approach is critical to helping you achieve independent living.

Accommodation Standards

If you’re planning on using the accommodation services of an SIL provider, consider visiting and inspecting their facilities before finalising your decision. This can help you assess if their facilities are accessible and comply with relevant guidelines and standards.

Staff Qualifications

Always remember to ask SIL providers about the certifications, training, and professional backgrounds of their staff members. Doing so will help you determine if they are qualified to support individuals with disabilities and other complex conditions.

Reputation

When researching SIL providers, look for testimonials and reviews from past clients to get an idea of their level of expertise and the quality of their services.

View SIL Vacancies Here

Questions to Ask when Selecting a SIL Provider

After narrowing down your choices for an SIL provider, get in touch with your preferred organisation’s to have a chat and determine if their services are right for you. Some questions to consider asking are:

What type of services do you offer?

Knowing about the range of services that SIL providers offer, such as accommodation support, daily living assistance, community participation, and skills development can help you decide if they are aligned with your goals and needs.

What accommodation options do you offer?

Ask detailed questions about a provider’s accommodation options, including the type of housing that they offer and the facility’s various accessibility features. Also, ask about its location and if there are nearby places that can support social participation.

How do you support social and community participation?

Being an active member of the community is one of the foundations of independent living. When choosing an SIL provider, make sure to enquire about their specialised services or programs that are geared toward fostering social and community participation.

What is the cost of your services and are there additional fees?

Although the services of SIL providers are covered by your NDIS funding, it’s still important to ask them if they charge other fees. Being aware of these additional costs can help ensure that you’re able to make the most out of your NDIS plan’s budget.
